Charlie Murray
Charlie Murray is a singer, choral director and music practitioner based in Yorkshire. Born in
Lancaster, he learned his musical craft as a chorister at Lancaster Priory and at the Lancaster
Royal Grammar School where he learned singing and directing from Don Gillthorpe and
Jeremy Truslove.
Charlie read music at Huddersfield University, singing with the university chamber choir and
studying under Andrew Slater and Rachel Nicholls where he received a first class honours
degree. While at Huddersfield, Charlie started to gain attention as a young oratorio singer,
working with choirs in Lancashire and Yorkshire.
Continuing his study at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Charlie began to explore
operatic repertoire, culminating in being chosen as one of Waterperry Opera Festival’s
Young Artists in their 2022 festival.
Upon returning to Yorkshire, Charlie turned his attention towards education in music,
alongside performing. He is a singing teacher at Horsforth School and Sixth Form, and at
Crawshaw Academy, both in Leeds.
At aged 30, Charles has now made a name for himself as a concert singer across the UK and
has turned to musical directing as part of his portfolio career.
In 2024, Charles was instated as the Director of Choral Music at Halifax Minster, where he
leads the Halifax Minster Choir in services and concerts throughout the year – the highlight
being the live BBC One Christmas Day Broadcast (available on iPlayer until December 2025).
Charlie is extremely excited to start directing Wetherby Choral Society in September 2025.
He looks forward to leading the choir in some of the most exceptional choral works from
throughout the ages, and to bringing his own style to the choir.
